Framed Light at Here
This is the work shown upstairs at Here in Berkhamsted in December 2020.
These works arise from my continuing investigation of paint, pigment, colour and the substances that hold the pigment together (mediums). All the work is made using oil paints, on canvas.
The large pieces are part of the ‘Framed Light’ series, where I layer glazes (very thinned translucent paint) over the hard white surfaces of ready made canvases. At times I have used oven cleaner to partly remove dry layers of paint before glazing over again. The grid is an arbitrary method I use to structure this work.
The small square pieces are from the ‘Signals’ series, paintings of the signs I’ve glimpsed from railway and car windows. These have a number of layers of paint to build up the density of surface of a sign. There is an abstraction and obscurity in the signs – I don’t know what they mean that is intriguing.
The other pieces are made on raw canvas, which I stretch over a frame. I have applied layers of paint, wet on wet, to soak into the canvas, with a rich, blurry, uncertain result.
